Greece. Known for its sun and sea, it also holds the key for growing the very finest herbs.
Located under the Acropolis Hill of Athens, Daphnis & Chloe is a one-stop shop that specialises in the natural bounty and rural traditions of Greece, herbs. Named after a second century Greek tale of predestined love, Daphnis & Chloe has quickly become the place for professional chefs and home-cooks since it opened in 2013.
“A gift from nature”, says founder, Evangelia Koutsovoulou of the distinctive taste of her available herbs; sage from Epirus; purple thyme flower; balsamic bay leaf, all of which have been imbued by the sea, salt and soil of the Greek archipelago. Daphnis & Chloe also create their own herbal blends which can be used in teas, dry rubs and even cocktails. The energising “Office Blend” tea is a best seller, made up of rose hips, Greek mountain tea, thyme flowers and peppermint. Each herb specimen has a unique aroma and a high concentration of flavourful essential oils, thanks to the dazzling sun and rich soil.
Every herb is sourced by Koutsovoulou, who maps out the remoter Ionian and Aegan islands where they grow best. Working with local farmers, each purchase of herbs is made with love and a true understanding of the species and the way it has been grown. Once in the hands of Koutsovoulou, the herbs wind their way up in Michelin-star restaurants in Athens, Milan and further afield.
